1994 erschien die Beatles Collection Live at the BBC und wurde weltweit gefeiert. Sie erreichte Platz 1 der britischen Charts, Platz 3 in den USA und verkaufte mehr als fünf Millionen Exemplare in nur sechs Wochen.
Mit "On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2" ist ab dem 8. November der Nachfolger im Handel erhältlich - als Doppel-CD oder als 180g 4-Vinyl-Set mit einem 48-seitigen Booklet. Unter den 63 Tracks sind 37 bisher unveröffentlichte Performances und 23 ebenfalls unveröffentlichte Aufnahmen von humorvollen Unterhaltungen, die im Studio zwischen den Bandmitgliedern und Radiomoderatoren ausgetauscht wurden. Selbstredend gibt es keine Überschneidungen mit der vorhergehenden Live at the BBC-Sammlung.
Die Beatles spielten zu ganz unterschiedlichen Gelegenheiten und für die verschiedensten Sendungen in den Studios der BBC. Auf "On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2" hören wir aus erster Hand, wie die Band sich und ihren Sound der Nation präsentierte. Paul McCartney war besonders überwältigt, als er die alten Aufnahmen wieder hörte: "Man kann die Energie und die Stimmung förmlich spüren. Wir haben wirklich alles gegeben und uns nicht zurückgehalten. Wir wollten, dass es die besten Auftritte unserer Karriere werden."
Zehn der Songs auf On Air hatte die Band in den 1960ern gar nicht für die EMI aufgenommen, darunter sogar zwei, die auf dieser Sammlung zum allerersten Mal auftauchen: ihre live ausgestrahlte Performance von Chuck Berrys "I'm Talking About You" und ein großartiges Cover des Klassikers "Beautiful Dreamer". Auch "Happy Birthday, Dear Saturday Club", eine Verneigung der Band vor der wichtigsten Popsendung der 60er auf der BBC, ist eine weitere Überraschung.
Zwischen März 1962 und Juni 1965 strahlte die BBC in Großbritannien sage und schreibe 275 einzigartige Performances von den Beatles aus. Allein 1963 trat die Band in 39 Radiosendungen auf. Im Laufe der Zeit spielten die Beatles 88 verschiedene Songs bei BBC-Sessions - einige davon mehrere Male, andere nur ein einziges Mal.
Auf On Air sind auch Mitschnitte von 30 besonders beliebten Beatles-Songs, darunter fünf Nummer Eins Hits und weitere Klassiker wie: "I Saw Her Standing There", "Twist And Shout", "Do You Want To Know A Secret", "Boys", "Please Mister Postman", "Money", "And I Love Her" und "If I Fell".
Wie schon auf dem auch von Kritikern sehr positiv aufgenommenen Vorgänger sind auf "On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2" Audioclips zu hören, auf denen sich die Beatles mit den DJs Brian Matthew und Alan Freeman sowie mit Lee Peters und Rodney Burke unterhalten, den Moderatoren von Pop Go The Beatles.
Das erste BBC-Album der Beatles "Live at the BBC" aus dem Jahr 1994 erscheint zeitgleich in einer remasterten Neuauflage - und klingt besser als je zuvor. Diese Auswahl der Sessions vereinte neue Versionen ihrer Hits mit 30 spannenden Songs, die die Beatles zwar alle live im Radio gespielt, aber in den 1960ern auf keinem Album veröffentlicht hatten.
"Live at the BBC" wurde von George Martin zusammengestellt. Recherche und Auswahl für den Nachfolger "On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2" übernahmen die Produzenten Kevin Howlett und Mike Heatley. Beide Alben wurden in den Abbey Road Studios sorgfältig von Guy Massey und Alex Wharton gemastert. In den Booklets beider Sammlungen befinden sich Kevin Howletts Essays über die BBC-Sessions der Beatles und seine ausführlichen Kommentare zu allen Tracks.

‘Words Of Love’ was released in the UK on an album called Buddy Holly in July 1958. This BBC recording was broadcast fifteen months before the song’s inclusion on Beatles For Sale. John and Paul sang the two-part harmony which, through primitive but effective overdubbing, Buddy had sung with himself.

In December 1961, The Marvelettes’ record on the Tamla label was the first American pop number one for Berry Gordy’s Motown company. American hits issued on Tamla and Motown struggled to be heard on the BBC in the early sixties. When The Beatles became successful, they were tireless champions of the labels’ artists, particularly Marvin Gaye, The Miracles and Mary Wells.

This is the last of six radio performances of a song from The Beatles’ debut album Please Please Me. At the time of the broadcast, ‘Do You Want To Know A Secret’ was at the top of the British EP chart as one of the four tracks on Twist And Shout. A version recorded by Billy J. Kramer with The Dakotas reached number one in several British music papers’ charts in June. In America, as the A-side of a Beatles single on the Vee-Jay label, ‘Do You Want To Know A Secret’ peaked at number two behind Louis Armstrong’s ‘Hello, Dolly’ in May 1964.

The Shirelles’ original was the flip-side of the biggest of their three British hits - ‘Will You Love Me Tomorrow’. The single topped the American charts - one of 22 pop hits scored by The Shirelles in the States. This Pop Go The Beatles recording was released in 1995 on an EP of four BBC performances called Baby It’s You. This is the same version as on the "Baby It's You" 4 track EP from 1994.
