Dear Nadya, Katya & Masha,
I’m writing to show my support for you at this difficult time. I would like you to know that I very much hope the Russian authorities would support the principle of free speech for all their citizens and not feel that they have to punish you for your protest. Many people in the civilized world are allowed to voice their opinions and as long as they do not hurt anyone in doing so I believe this is the best way forward for all societies. I hope you can stay strong and believe that I and many others like me who believe in free speech will do everything in our power to support you and the idea of artistic freedom.

«Ich will, dass Ihr wisst: Ich hoffe sehr, dass die russischen Behörden das Prinzip der Redefreiheit für alle ihre Bürger respektieren und nicht glauben, Euch für Euren Protest bestrafen zu müssen», hieß es in dem Schreiben, das am Donnerstag auf McCartneys Internetseite veröffentlicht wurde. Solange freie Meinungsäußerung niemanden verletzte, sei dies der beste Weg für jede Gesellschaft.
Mit seinem Brief wolle McCartney auch die Aufmerksamkeit von Kremlchef Wladimir Putin erhalten, kommentierte die Moskauer Zeitung «Kommersant». Das Blatt erinnerte an einen herzlichen Empfang des Künstlers durch Putin 2003.
Zuvor hatten bereits zahlreiche Musiker wie Madonna oder die Red Hot Chili Peppers Freiheit für die jungen Frauen gefordert. Ihnen drohen nach einem «Punkgebet» gegen Putin in einer Kirche mehrere Jahre Haft wegen Rowdytum aus religiösem Hass.
